Mama Shop Cafe (Felicia Chin and Sora Ma)

This cafe is a (potential) time portal. If there was a gramophone playing retro songs like this in the background:

The feels will be multiplied by over a hundred times! But seriously, play this YouTube video while reading this review: it will give you that retro 50-60's feel instantly! Play it now and scroll down!

Sparkling Limau ($3.50)

Sparkling Limau at Mama Shop

Limau is mostly a Malaysian drink that consists of calamansi and sour plum. The sparkling take on this drink makes this very refreshing. Would have been even better if the drink is slightly more sour and citrusy! A slice of calamansi and a piece of the sour plum will also make it visually more appealing.

Green Bean Slush ($3.90)

Green Bean Slush at Mama Shop

I LOVED THIS. You know how some slush has bits of ice, or are too bland because the taste of the ice overpowered the main ingredient, or are just not that well blended that you can taste 2 distinct ingredients? Not this Green Bean Slush.

The ice and the green bean are very well blended. The ice did not dilute the taste but instead, adds a refreshing feel to the drink. You can taste the richness of the milk and green bean! The ice is also finely blended so it is very shiok to slurp it all with that straw.

Mama Quiche ($4.90)

Mama Quiche

The menu stated that the Mama Quiche is served with truffle chips, but instead I got some retro wheel biscuits. Obviously, those two did not go well together. However, the quiche was not too bad, although a tad dry. I was craving for some tomatoes, a few chunks of meat, or even some slices of ham while eating this.

Ovomaltine Waffle ($4.90)

Ovomaltine Waffle

Yi ya cha cha, CHA CHA CHA! Well, if you took up my advice and played that YouTube video, I am pretty sure she just sang that LOL.

This is the Ovomaltine Waffle, which is fluffy Belgium waffles served with chocolate crunchy Ovomaltine and strawberries. The waffles was definitely very fluffy, but I was definitely misled by the "crunchy" Ovomaltine.

Have you heard of Ovomaltine? Because the Evilbean has not heard of it until today. Seriously, this was the first time I came across this brand. I know Ovaltine, because their Ovaltine sweets were one of my FAVOURITE in traditional mama shop when I was young.

If I remembered correctly, they were 50 cents each and there is no way you could just buy one packet, because you could just finish the whole packet in 10 seconds. Back then, when your pocket money is $2 per day, this is considered a luxury:

But Ovomaltine is something new. Apparently, they look like this:

Ovomaltine

According to some online sources, Ovomaltine is the Switzerland brand while Ovaltine is the US brand. Ovomaltine does not contain any sugar while Ovaltine has sugar added to it. Wow, mindblown.

Back to the waffles. So, basically, the waffle is just this ovomaltine cream spread with few pieces of strawberry slices. I gave this #3evilbeans on my Instagram (@Evilbean) At $4.90, it is definitely a good draw for poor people like me.

Overall, the main selling point of this whole cafe is still the retro theme. Jointly opened by Mediacorp artistes Felicia Chin and Sora Ma, this cafe serves as a place for people to retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The prices are also kept at a very affordable range and the various retro merchandise sold at the cafe will definitely bring back lots of memories for the 70's, 80's and 90's!

Evilbean's last words/recommendation:
- A potential time portal cafe to reminiscent your childhood with affordable food of Asian-Western fusion! Bring your girlfriend/boyfriend here so you both can share childhood memories with each other!
- MUST-ORDER: Green Bean Slush

If you are intending to go there by public transport, alight at Chinatown and walk towards People's Park Complex. Walk through the hawker centre and look around for a sheltered staircase at the back exit, which will lead you straight into Pearl Hill Terrance.
