Food Review - Symmetry Cafe
Wednesday, October 29, 2014"Simi cafe again?"
"SYMMETRY."
"Simi tree? Maple tree? Angsana tree is it?"
Wakame Prawn Popcorn ($17)
Most of the time, what food we choose to eat depends on how delicious the name sounds. And this one sounds damn delicious. I love wakame, I love prawns, and everyone loves popcorn. This is also served with wasabi remoulade (aioli/mayonnaise base). Tell me, HOW TO NOT ORDER THIS? It comes in 10 pieces, so one piece of this prawn popcorn is almost $2. Slightly expensive, but I thought it was worth it!
Green Tea Latte ($6.50)
This green tea latte is one of the most photogenic drink that I have ever taken. Not only does it looks good, it tastes good as well!
Cafe Latte ($5.50)
Cafe Latte without head
According to a recent study, about 68% of the population loves biting off the head, be it gingerbread man cookies or gummy bears. The Evilbean is one of them. On another note, the latte is aromatic and well-balanced!
Broccolini and Eggs ($21)
This Broccolini & Eggs comes with a low temperature egg, hollandaise, roasted almond flakes, dehydrated blue berries, tomato confit and croissant. The blue berries adds sweetness while the almond flakes adds a roasted dimension to the salad. One of the very few interesting brunch combination that is both healthy and delicious!
Flan ($24)
The Flan consists of berkshire pork, sauteed mushrooms, egg, soubise (onion) sauce, mashed potato and pommery mustard. Just look at the runny egg, LOOK AT IT. It's almost as if it's wobbling in front of you!
(Although, if it's really wobbling, it's time to go to your nearest eye doctor)
This is for people who loves potato and creamy food, because it can get a bit "gelat" if you eat the whole portion by yourself. Otherwise, the pork was tender, and the pastry crust was crispy.
Ham Hock and Pancetta Steak ($23)
Doesn't this make you salivate already? Their Ham Hock and Pancetta Steak comes with scrambled eggs, roasted pork knuckle, smoked pancetta, soubise sauce, mustard and toast.
The toast, in their perfect golden brown colour, and the scrambled eggs that is compacted nicely just opens up your brunch appetite. Also, the ham hock and the pancetta steak went very well with the mustard and soubise sauce. Loved this!
Pork Croissant ($19)
The Pork Croissant is a few slices of pork belly with caramalised onions, hickory sauce, scrambled eggs, mustard and served with a croissant. Again, the scrambled eggs are perfect and the pork is soft, tender and flavourful. As compared to the other dishes, there are lesser ingredients that went into this one, so this might be an option for times when you are too full to eat a full brunch, but still want to eat brunch. Otherwise known as mouth itchy/ not-contented-to-sit-and-watch-other-people-eat-option.
Chocolate Cake ($6)
This was off their menu, so there isn't a proper name for it. The chocolate wasn't too sweet and the cake was moist. Good to share with 2-3 people after a full meal!
Overall, the price at Symmetry might be slightly higher, but the food quality, plating and creativity that went into each dish is pretty much symmetrical with the pricier tag.
Fun fact: they have a resident cat which they kind-of adopted, and you might be able to see it if you sit at their alfresco. Totally no fear of humans and will sit beside you while you dine, if it likes you! I totally forgot what name they gave the cat though, so if you have a chance to pop by Symmetry, help me ask what's the cat name okay?
Cafe Rating (out of 5 Evilbeans):
(4.5)
Evilbean's last words/recommendation:
- Slightly pricier tag but the food are really great! Together with friendly service and a charming alfresco area, you have a cafe that is here to stay.
- MUST-ORDER: Ham Hock and Pancetta Steak, Broccolini & Eggs, Green Tea latte

I love the way you have described the place expats should visit. On the other hand, if you are an expat and plan on moving to Singapore, do check out www.placematch.sg. I found it to be very useful in finding a place.
