Review: Pies & Coffee - New Pie Menu!
Tuesday, October 20, 2015
We Singaporeans are weird. We are in obscene fascination of abnormal colours on our food. From charcoal black to red velvet, it seems that the brighter the colours, the more turned on we get. ARE WE HUMAN PEACOCKS NOW?
Well, Pies & Coffee has introduced a new range of colourful pies that will satisfy our strange desires. Get ready...
Lobster Bisque Baked Rice ($14.90)
Before the pie-mania, we started out with this Lobster Bisque Baked Rice. Made with fresh flower crabs and fresh prawns, this dish takes SIX FREAKING HOURS to prepare. The result is a very flavourful bisque that engulfs the long-grain rice with its sweet and seafood notes. I AM MISSING THIS ALREADY.
New England Clam Chowder Soup ($9.20)
The clams are stir-fried with onions, carrots, potatoes, celeries and mixed herbs before fresh clam juice is added to the potpourri. A rich cream then thickens the liquid, and the soup is cooked and reduced for 2 hours before serving. What I really loved was the crusty bread bowl. It was really fluffy. I felt as if I was dipping clouds into the clam chowder!
Wagyu Beef Cheek ($11.90)
Beef Cheek chunks are stuffed into this pie, together with garlic, onion, carrot, ginger, chilli and coriander. As expected from Wagyu beef, the meat is soft and tender, due to the higher percentages of monounsaturated fats. At $11.90, I thought this was a pretty reasonable price for a pie with Wagyu beef.
Barbecue Chicken Pie in Beetroot Crust ($11.90)
First up on the colourful pies is this Barbecue Chicken Pie in Beetroot Crust. Yeap, that purple colour on the pie is dyed with beetroot, thus that "Tinky-Winky" colour. Besides the interesting colour, there are also ingredients like apricot jam and pineapple that are loaded into this pie, making this a delightful sweet+savoury combination for those that loves this kind of taste!

Charcoal Crust Curry Chicken Pie ($11.20)
Next up on the colourful pies is this Charcoal Crust Curry Chicken Pie. With the whole pie blackened, you never know whether your pie is black because it is charcoal, or because they burnt it in the oven LOL. (I am kidding)
Consisting of ingredients like lemongrass, assorted spices and fresh coconut milk, you can imagine the chicken smothered nicely with curry inside this black-looking pie.
Croque Monsieur ($14.90)
I was surprised that they serve Croque Monsieur at Pies & Coffee. Usually only found in 'atas' 'angmo' cafes, Pies & Coffee serves their croque monsieur that is accented with olive and pesto sauce. The focaccia tasted herb-y, but bite into it and experience the mozzarella cheese and béchamel sauce engulfing you together with turkey ham and garlic turkey.
Hungarian Beef Goulash ($14.50)
With a name like Pies & Coffee, you can be sure that they take their pies very seriously. Another dish that is stewed for more than 5 hours, this Hungarian Beef Goulash is the perfect alternative if you want something that is "soupy". With ingredients like bell peppers, paprika, cayenne and onion, this will definitely warm your soul.
Curry Chicken Pot Pie ($14.50)
Just the looks of this is already very appetising. That seductive thigh sticking out of the bread bowl makes you wanna grab it by its joint and chew the meat off like a barbarian.
Seriously though. Do it. Because #YOLO. With potatoes, carrots, curry leaf, lemongrass, tomatoes and various spices, this is another fragrant, buttery pie that I feel is a must-order.
Sticky Date Cake ($7.90)
Overall, Pies & Coffee is definitely one of the few places that offers gourmet pies at affordable prices. The time and effort they put into stewing and making their pies results in delicious savoury pies that are hard to find elsewhere.
Now all they need is some Cheese Pies and Lychee Pies... because Singaporeans love these kind of "punny" things.
