Toby's The Dessert Asylum at TradeHub21 - It's Really A Dessert Asylum

Sunday, December 13, 2015

With a name like The Dessert Asylum (TDA), one would expect the cafe to serve a galore of desserts that are cranky, weird and blow your mind so much that you have to be admitted into an asylum. So, was the Evilbean admitted into one after his visit here?

Coffee Chendol ($7.90)

Toby's The Dessert Asylum Tradehub21 - Coffee Chendol

This is probably the first time I have tried the combination of coffee and chendol. Made with illy's coffee, chendol and topped with gula melaka, this Coffee Chendol was surprisingly not as sweet as I thought it would be. It tasted more like an iced latte with chendol toppings, without the distinct coconut taste you would expect from chendol. Did not really blow my mind but well, not too bad either.

Toby's Platter ($33.90)

We started off our meal with this massive meat platter consisting of: bacon wrap chicken, buffalo bites, taco wings, pork ribs and fries. I really liked the buffalo bites and bacon wrap chicken as they were full of flavours. There was something lacking for the pork ribs; I felt that it would be better with more sauce and spices.

Prawns & Mussels Tagliatelle ($17.90)

I had quite a bit of expectation for this Prawns & Mussels Tagliatelle, but this was the most disappointing dish that night. The tagliatelle was very bland. I could almost taste the farm the tagliatelle was made from because it was so raw. They had most probably just drizzled the tomato sauce over the pasta rather than pan-frying it, which might explain the detach of flavours.

Grilled Salmon Steak ($18.90)

This grilled salmon steak was awesome! I am not really a fan of cooked salmon but the chef handled this salmon really well. The skin was grilled to a nice, crispy texture and the inside was soft and flaky. I could taste the fragrant omega fish oil with every bite, with the black pepper accentuating the light taste of the salmon. The potato salad was a perfect complement to this dish.

Toby's Deluxe Burger ($16.50)

I wasn't expecting much from the burger but WOW, this blew my mind. Consisting of bacon, tomatoes, onions and cheese, the cool thing about this Toby's Deluxe Burger was that the CHEESE WAS INSIDE THE BEEF PATTY! Imagine the cheese flowing out of the patty just like a "liu sha bao" or lava cake... Heart Eyes Emoji

This was so good, I devoured this within 3 seconds. A MUST-ORDER if you are admitting into this asylum!

After all the mains, it was time for the highlight of this cafe: the desserts. Toby's TDA is probably one of the few places that actually serves a huge range of desserts, and when I say huge range, I mean like 36++ dessert choices. They are not called dessert asylum for fun guys.

Arctic Bombshell ($12.90)

Yeap, as I have mentioned on my Instagram post, this Arctic Bombshell looked like an artwork but tasted otherwise. The meringue was cloyingly sweet; it felt as if someone chewed up the marshmallows and then vomited them out in liquid form. However, once you scrape away the meringue, the chocolate ganache and brownie inside will delight you.

Seek Asylum ($15.90)

Toby's The Dessert Asylum Tradehub21 - Seek Asylum

Seek Asylum is a combination of macadamia ice cream, mocha almond ice cream with cookies and Baileys Irish Cream all together on a subliminal plating that looks aptly like prison bars. Not only was I impressed with the creativity with the name and plating, the taste was AWESOME as well. The chunks of macadamia hidden in the ice cream provided a nice, nutty flavour. The creamy Baileys drizzled over the double layer mudpie ice-cream gave this dessert a sweet, alcoholic touch. Please lock me up in this asylum.

Lord Vader ($15.90)

Toby's The Dessert Asylum Tradehub21 - Lord Vader

Rum & raisin ice cream, double chocolate ice cream, chocolate chips with waffles bits and Grand Marnier make up this Lord Vader mudpie. If you are a fan of rum & raisin flavour, this dessert will make you squirm with delight with its strong rum & raisin taste. The genius addition of chocolate chips with waffle bits gave this mudpie another texture amidst of those ice cream. Lord Vader will approve of this dessert.

Toby's TDA was recently opened in Tradehub21 in Oct 2015 after moving out of their old location at Parkway Parade. It has been graced by several celebrities over the years, at which you can check out the photographs taken at the large white wall.

One of the good thing about TDA is that they have free parking after 7:00 PM during the weekdays and all day free parking during the weekends! Hooray if you drive!

Skip the mains, go for their desserts. With a plethora of desserts like mudpies, cakes and waffles, I am sure you would find a dessert of your liking.
Afterall, they are not called The Dessert Asylum for nothing.
