Best Cafes, Street Food and Attractions in Malacca - Best Food and Attractions Guide (Part 1)
Thursday, June 09, 2016Malacca (or Melaka) is the historical state of Malaysia, a place with rich heritage and culture. If you want to experience the old world charm without sacrificing too much of your modern-day luxuries, Malacca would be the perfect place for you.
In this travel guide, the Evilbean explores Jonker Street, Malacca and filters out only the BEST CAFES and STREET FOOD that are worth the calories. This is not your usual guide, this is the ONLY HONEST GUIDE you will need for your trip to Malacca!
1. Best Hotel + Best Chocolate Cake - Hatten Hotel
If you are wondering where to stay, I would highly recommend Hatten Hotel. The lobby is big and posh, the room is clean, AND THEY HAVE RAIN SHOWER. OH GOD I LOVE RAIN SHOWERS.
The absolute BEST THING about Hatten Hotel? Their chocolate cake. I swear, their chocolate cake ranks as one of the top few in my list. And guess what? It's (technically) free!
All you have to do is to head up to their rooftop bar and just pretend it's your birthday.
"It's legit my birthday on that night though. I SWEAR"
Seriously, you have to try their chocolate cake.
2. Peranakan Food - Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine
Just behind Hatten Hotel a Peranakan restaurant that is immensely popular. I would highly advise that you make a reservation before going down to Amy, because the restaurant was FULLY BOOKED when we were there. They reject all walk-ins when they are full. Thus, to avoid disappointment, reserve your seats at least 2-3 days before you head down.
Why are they so popular? Long story short - the founder Madam Amy Koh is a famous chef that has won many accolades for her authentic Nyonya cuisines.
Pie Tee (RM2/piece)
The Pie Tee is a crispy top hat with shredded turnip filling and served with chilli sauce. I found them to be quite normal, just your average Kueh Pie Tees.
Ayam Pongteh (Medium - RM21)
This is a classic nyonya chicken stew with soya bean paste, Chinese mushrooms and potatoes. This tasted very "homely", a dish that will reminiscent your mom's cooking. The stew was light and complements perfectly with a bowl of steaming white rice. The chicken was not as tender as I expected it to be, but it is still delicious.
Udang Lemak Nenas (Market Price)
Any dish that has pineapples in it piques my interest. This Udang Lemak Nenas is a dish that has prawns swimming in a pool of spicy coconut gravy and, yes, pineapple chunks. The description of this is already saliva-inducing. I loved how the sweetness from the pineapples and the mild spiciness from the gravy came together. The prawns were all fresh and had a nice firm bite to them. SEDAP!
Nasi Goreng (RM5)
The rice was tender and fluffy , but I felt that the Nasi Goreng was too light on the flavours.
Kangkung Kobis Keledek Masak Titik Lemak (Medium - RM16)
This is one of their specialty dish here. Consisting of water convolvulus (or kangkung), cabbage and sweet potatoes in coconut milk, this was creamy and full of flavours. Claimed to be an original dish that can only be found here, this is something that you have to come and experience it yourself!

3. Cheesy Prawn Meehoon at Restoran Tong Sheng (东升园海鲜家)Tue - Sun:
11:30 AM - 2:30 PM
6:00 PM - 9:30 PM
*Closed on Mondays*
Be prepared to queue for at least an hour or two if you come here during the weekends/holidays.
Cheesy Prawn Meehun (Small - RM35)
This is the dish that we queued 2 hours for. Honestly, it's good if you do not have to queue. Once you factor in the queue time, this Cheesy Prawn Meehun drops to an overall rating of just #3evilbeans. The cheese is too light in taste. It kind of taste like the gravy you usually have in Satay Beehoon, just that this one has cheese in it. It just didn't give me the "shiok" feeling.
White Cabbage (Small - RM8)
The white cabbage was nice. Clean, crisp and lightly seasoned. And they were served hot!
Horlick Prawn Balls (Small - RM30)
Another interesting dish that we had high hopes for - Horlick Prawn balls. I have never really liked Horlick since young because MILO IS STILL THE BEST. These balls further cemented my dislike for Horlick. Firstly, we couldn't even taste any Horlick and second, DO THEY EVEN LOOK BALL-SHAPED TO YOU? WHY CHEAT MY FEELINGS?!
Otak-Otak Steamed Eggs (Small - RM15)
I love steamed eggs and I love Otah. Therefore, I had to order a plate of this to try even though I knew that we were going to have difficulty finishing this.
Nonetheless, this is exactly what you would expect it to taste like, so no surprises here. The portion is very generous for a small - we were playing Scissors-Paper-Stone to see who has to finish up the few pieces of otah that were left.
Overall, given the queue time, price, and food quality, Tong Sheng is not really a must-go place in Malacca. Unless you have a lot of time to spare, I would suggest that you skip this food stop if you have to queue for more than 30 minutes.

We headed over to Jonker Street the next morning for a day of cafe-hopping!
4. Breakfast + OOTD - Kaya Kaya Cafe
Kaya Kaya Cafe is famous for two things:
1. Its rustic decor
2. Its two-storey wall mural
There is no purpose in coming here if you are not taking an #OOTD picture with the wall. (Yes that's the world we live in now. Everything we do has to be validated by pictures/social media postings.)
Your photos will turn out effortlessly gorgeous with the amount of natural lighting and greens that are in the cafe.
See U Again (RM7)
Play this game with the waiter when they come and take your order for this homemade pandan leaves and lemongrass drink. Start singing: "It's been a long day, without you my friend. And I'll tell you all about it when I..."?
(Stare at him/her intensely for maximum awkwardness)
Kaya Breakfast (RM22)
Unfortunately, their signature Kaya Breakfast was very mediocre. Consisting of German sausages, chicken ham, sauteed mushroom, scrambled eggs (or sunny side up), toast and salad, this felt like a dish that can be put together by anyone. Not really worth the calories.
Kaya Cheese Toast (RM7)
For a cafe that has TWO KAYAS in their name, the Kaya was really subpar. For those that are unfamiliar with Kaya, it is a jam that is usually made from a mixture of coconut milk, eggs, sugar and pandan leaves. The BEST kind of Kaya for me are the ones that are intensely flavoured with the aroma of pandan and has just the right amount of sweetness.
This was neither.
It was just a skit of me going: "Wtf wtf wtf so sweet ughhhh" x3.
Salted Duck Egg Spaghetti (RM20)
Finally, a dish that was actually pretty good. The Salted Duck Egg Spaghetti was a dish with diced chicken breast cooked with curry leaves, chilli and salted egg yolk. It was bursting with flavours and the medley of salted egg yolk and the spices was pleasing all my senses. I actually rated this dish a #4evilbeans on my Instagram @evilbean (Follow me! Link opens in new window!).
The ambience here is to-die-for. It's a perfect place for you to read a book, busk in the sunlight, breathe in the freshly produced oxygen from the plants around you while being comforted by the calming sounds of the wind chimes.
Food wise, however, it was not that spectacular. Maybe it's just a case of us ordering the wrong food, because I have read some really rave reviews for their dishes. We will definitely visit Kaya Kaya cafe again though, because life is all about second chances.

5. White Melaka Cheese Cake - Ola Lavandaria CafeDaily: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Exit Kaya Kaya Cafe and make about 10 steps in front of you for your next cafe stop - Ola Lavandaria Cafe.
We are only here to eat one item - their famed White Melaka Cheese Cake.
White Melaka Cheese Cake (RM8.90)
A few reviews have claimed that Ola Lavanderia Cafe probably serves the best cheesecake in Malacca. Well, you can now add Evilbean to that list of endorsement.
Light yet creamy, perfect layering of the cheese and berry flavours, and a nice crispy cookie crumble base, this is a cheesecake to-die-for!
Besides, I like how quiet and cosy this cafe was. A great spot to just chill, catch up on your friend's social media (yes they have free Wi-Fi here!) or to sort through the photos you have taken so far.

6. Coconut Ice-Cream/Shake - Bikini Toppings
Yeap, you don't need to go all the way to Bangkok for some really good coconut ice-cream anymore. Plus, you gotta admit, the name is quite kinky.
I had to do a double take at where they drilled the holes... (NOT THE NIPPLES, my dirty mind thought)
Having a coconut ice-cream in the sweltering weather (with temperature reaching 36 degrees!) of Malacca is pure pleasure. Honestly, I don't know if the weather bumped up the Evilbean rating for this ice-cream+coconut flesh dessert, but it totally felt like a #5evilbeans for me while I was eating this. SO GOOD.
So gonna try out their Bikini Shake the next time!

7. Take a stroll down Malacca RiverMon, Wed: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Tues, Thur-Sun: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Burn off some of that calories by taking a stroll down the scenic Malacca River.
"Yeap, a MAMEE BOAT"
You can choose to relief from the heat in 2 ways:
- Fat way: EAT ALL DA ICE-CREAM
- Healthy way: Drink some herbal tea
Given that we have already eaten so much good food, we decided to go the healthy (and maybe not so enjoyable) route - Traditional herbal tea.
Herbal 24 Cooling Tea, Herbal 5 Tea (RM2/Bowl)
You can seldom see traditional tea houses like that in many parts of the world anymore. To be able to gulp down bitter tea with that ancient porcelain bowl can be quite an experience.
AND IT'S DAMN BITTER. Just look at her face
They also have really good stuff for your health like Herbal Jelly and Bird Nest. You should definitely give this little-known place a try when you are in Malacca!
Halle Suite House (中国华佗涼茶館)
Corner of Jalan Hang Kasturi and Jalan Tukang Besi
9. Blue Dumplings???
I am willing to bet my whole fortune that you have never, ever, eaten a blue dumpling. Yes, BLUE.
Nyonya Chang (RM6.50)
I was wondering: "Did they purposely dye their dumplings in blue so that they are Instagram-worthy?" Turns out, this is actually the traditional way of making Nyonya dumplings! The touch of blue is made from Bunga Telang (blue pea flower) extract, and is usually filled with pork belly, mushroom and wintermelon.
The taste was a combination of sweet and spicy - thanks to the wintermelon and shrimp spices. Another interesting must-try if you are in Malacca.
Try to head there early because when we went there, it was sold out by 4:00PM! We were very lucky to get the last one.

10. Mini Pandan Pancakes - The Daily Fix
You might miss this cafe if you are not paying attention - The Daily Fix Cafe is hidden in the back of a souvenir store!
However, once you find the secret entrance, you will be greeted with a cute smiling TV and a lovely rustic ambience.
"The chair our grandparents used to sit on"
The decoration is somewhat similar to the Kaya Kaya cafe - they are both decorated with vintage furnitures, lots of greens, and has the beautiful sunlight brightening up the cafe.
However, both of them gave me a very different vibe despite the similar decor. Kaya Kaya felt more relaxed and laid-back, The Daily Fix felt as if I had travelled to the past... a past with pancakes.
Cafe Latte (RM10.50)
Smooth and aromatic, this was such a lovely coffee. I had to resist the urge to order another cup (since we were going to another cafe for coffee next)!
Iced Rose Latte (RM12.50)
It is hard to get a good Iced Rose Latte - you have to ensure that the rose flavour does not overwhelm the coffee. This was okay, but since I am used to having my coffee without sugar, I found this to be a little on the sweeter side.
Local Pandan Pancake with Gula Melaka (RM13.90)
Look how gorgeous the photo turned out under the natural sunlight! *_*
I LOVEEEEE how fluffy the pancakes were! The gula melaka and the vanilla ice-cream were a match made in heaven, with the sweetness of the gula melaka balanced out by the cold, milky taste of vanilla ice-cream.
There is so much to rave about on The Daily Fix. From the ambience, to their coffee, to their food, everything were on point. I heard that their Durian Cake is awesome as well, can't wait to revisit this cafe for it when I go back to Malacca again!

11. Try out coffee from 13 states of Malaysia - Calanthe Art Cafe
If you love coffee as much as I do, then this cafe that lets you have a taste of coffee from THIRTEEN states of Malaysia is a must-visit.
Here are the coffee from 13 states in the menu:
Unless you intend to stay awake until year 2026, there is no way that you can try out all 13 coffees in one sitting. After pondering about my choice for like 15 minutes, I finally decided to order the coffee from...
Kelantan Kopi (RM4.50)
Honestly, I am a latte person. Try as I might, my tastebuds just wouldn't give traditional kopi (coffee) like this a chance.
The biscuit was nice though.
Hand Brewed Coffee
This suited my tastebuds so much better. It was a tad on the sweeter side though.

12. Beautiful Hot Chocolate - Eat At 18
Head over to Eat At 18 for a hot chocolate that is visually appealing!
Hot Chocolate (RM12.90)
I first had something like this when I was in Melbourne, Australia. Basically, you are supposed to stir in the chocolate truffles until they are completely melted into the hot milk. Therefore, you cannot spend too much time taking photos of this because the milk will turn cold quickly!
And it is what it is - a hot chocolate. It just looks pretty and insta-worthy.
Pineapple Passionfruit Soda (RM12.90)
We also ordered a Pineapple Passionfruit Soda to cool ourselves from the heat of Malacca. Tangy, sweet and refreshing, this was a much needed drink after walking around under the sun.

13. Root Beer Espresso - Locahouz
Love the decor in here. It looked like a mini art gallery + a furniture shop combined.
Espresso Root Beer (RM9.90)
And here it is, the espresso root beer in its full glory! Taste-wise, it was interesting when the foam was still smooth and frothy, as it added another layer of taste. Once the froth dissipates, the drink becomes exactly what you would imagine root beer + espresso would taste like.
Therefore, try to drink this like how you would down tequila shots - fast and furious.
Banana Cheese Cake (RM9.90)
I was genuinely surprised by how good this Banana Cheese Cake tasted! The banana cubes were generously coated with cocoa powder, and the cheese cake was light and fluffy. This was quickly polished off because IT WAS SO GOOD!

14. Owl Ice Coffee - Backlane Coffee
Head over to Backlane Coffee for another great place to take #OOTD photos!
You should have noticed by now just how much the cafes in Malacca love their plants. Photosynthesis is EVERYWHERE.
And of course, the #OOTD shot that you came for at their backlane:
Head back inside once you had your #OOTD shots to try out their specialty: Mr Owl Iced Latte.
Mr Owl Iced Latte (RM12)
Well, this was simply coffee that has been frozen into the shape of an owl. All you have to do is to pour the milk over the owl to get your iced latte. If you would like to drown some owls in milk, this is the place to be.
Macarons (RM4.50 each)
I really like how they have decorated their cafe. It had a certain rustic, European charm to it that made me felt very cozy and at home. We didn't even know we had sat for more than an hour in here until we left! I would highly recommend you to give this cafe a visit when you are in Malacca.

If I have to pick out the best cafe in Malacca, I would think The Baboon House wins the title hands down.
Once you arrive at the place, you might feel stumped as the door is locked. BUT THANK GOODNESS YOU READ EVILBEAN'S BLOG. All you have to do is to press a doorbell and wait (patiently) for someone to open up the door for you.
As soon as you enter, you would be greeted by a myriad of weird, spooky decors. We were fortunate to be seated at the indoor courtyard. The cafe had a certain charm to it. I felt very relaxed in there.
As I look around, I saw paintings lining up the wall, huge bunches of joss sticks that had finished burning in the potted plants, and red lanterns juxtaposing against the bright daylight. When we were there, there was also a cute resident cat lying restlessly on the chair.
There is a no-photography policy in here, but here's a photo from another website that brilliantly captured the essence of the courtyard:
(Source: melakatravel.info)
They are famous for their burgers, and trust me, they were AWESOME! Like #5evilbeans awesome. Pair your burgers with their Somersby Cider for maximum "shiokness" (pleasure).
The mysterious vibe, the no-photography policy, the burger and the resident cat makes this place a MUST-GO when you are in Malacca. This was truly a one-of-a-kind place that felt different from all the cafes that I have been. You would be a baboon to not visit this place at least once in your lifetime.

- Give these a miss:
"X for do not try"
There are some blogs that recommend the following places, but I thought that they were not really that good in my opinion. You can definitely give them a miss if you do not have time.
a. Hainanese Chicken Rice - Chop Chung Wah
Situated right at the main entrance of Jonker Street, this chicken rice shop is perpetually seen with long queues no matter what time you go.
After standing under the sweltering sun for almost 2 hours, all I could say is MEH. These are not that good to justify the queuing.
b. Dim Sum - Restoran Rong Mao
Again, some food and travel blogs recommend this place for good dim sum. But honestly, the dim sum were average at best. I would rather spend my calories on some other food.
And that concludes Part 1 of my guide to the Best Cafes and Food in Malacca!
"Coming up in Part 2 of my Malacca guide!"
Stay tuned to Part 2 of my Malacca guide as I tell you more about the BEST Jonker Street Night Market/Street Food + Colourful Rickshaws + Supermarket Must-Buys!
