Orchard Central Food Trail - Tonkin, Milagro, 49 Seats, Nunsaram
Friday, June 05, 2015
I went on a food trail in Orchard Central previously which consisted of salads, cupcakes and Taiwan ice.
Now, add Vietnamese food, Spanish food, pastas and Bingsu to the list of food stops you can hop around in the comfort of air-con at Orchard Central!
Food Trail #1 - Tonkin Vietnamese Noodle Bar (#B1-02)
Our first stop was Vietnamese food at Tonkin. If you thought that the "bar" in their name means you get to eat noodles dipped in alcohol, well, you need to get that alcoholism in you checked man.
Tonkin Vietnamese Noodle bar is actually an establishment with casual dining concept where you can just drop by for some simple, comforting Vietnamese food. Which probably explains the small shop space.
Green Mango Salad with Shrimps ($7.90)
I always feel edgy when I see mango in the dish, for fear that the mangoes are sour. I DO NOT TAKE SOUR WELL - my face will cringe so tightly my eyes nose and lips will merge together.
Thank goodness these mangoes are fresh and crisp with just a slight hint of sourness, balanced with the taste of the shrimps. Refreshingly good for a starter!

Fresh Spring Rolls/Nem Cuon ($6.90)
I am not a fan of Vietnamese spring roll. I find the skin to be too raw for my taste, like eating "Muah chee" without the peanut powder. It is, however, a very healthy dish as the filling is packed with vegetables!
Banh Mi Pate Grilled Chicken ($6.90)
Cultural lesson time: Did you know that Vietnam was once colonised by the French? DON'T KNOW RIGHT. WHAT WERE YOU DOING DURING HISTORY LESSON?
"This must be you during History lessons"
Because of the colonisation, there is quite a huge influence of the French on the Vietnamese culture, and Banh Mi is one of them. The baguette is distinctively French, but the addition of the coriander and onions make it slightly more Asian.
Not bad, but I prefer more meat and sauces.
Rice Flour Rolls with Pork ($6.90)
This is quite appetising with the fish sauce dip!
Drip Ice Coffee with Milk ($3.90)
The Evilbean loves coffee, and this is one of the few F&B outlets that I have been to that serves Drip Coffee. AND IT WAS SO GOOD. AND CHEAP. VERY CHEAP. One of the must order in my opinion!
There are actually a few steps to do before you get to enjoy this coffee.
1. Wait for the coffee to completely finish dripping
2. Lift up the container
3. Add in the condensed milk and stir
4. Lastly, transfer the stirred coffee into the glass of ice. ENJOY SIPPING THIS CHEAP AND GOOD COFFEE!
I also had the Braised Beef Golden Coin Noodle Soup ($9.90), but I forgot to take a photo of it. This was very good. I was surprised by the taste of the braised beef - very flavourful!
If you never had Vietnamese food before, this is a good place to start.
And yes, THEY DO SERVE ALCOHOL.

Food Trail #2 - Milagro Spanish Restaurant (#08-06/07)
After Vietnam, we (imagined that we) flew over to Spain for some Spanish food at Milagro Spanish Restaurant at Level 8 of Orchard Central.
HOLA!
Prawns al Ajillo ($16)
Fresh Tiger Prawns in olive oil. YES TIGER PRAWNS. Expect your prawns to be succulent and sweet, further enhanced by the taste of olive oil.
Cold Soup Chupitos ($8)
You eat this either by dipping your breads into it, or you can spread the soup like how you spread Nutella. I prefer to dunk my bread inside. Easier.
You are actually supposed to eat this in sequence, according to their intensity. Ask your friendly waiter for the sequence to enjoy this as intended by the chef!
Potatoes Bravas ($8)
These potatoes will go very well with some wine! Do not order this before your mains though, as it comes in a huge portion and can be very filling!
Fried Cauliflowers ($4)
Not meatballs. Not popcorn chicken. This will blow your mind; this is actually FRIED CAULIFLOWERS. Yes, the chefs of Milagro went and pick up after Chen Tian Wen when he threw away all those cauliflowers and fried them to golden perfection.
One of the most interesting dish that I have tried so far. Give it a try, maybe you still can taste the beach in those fried cauliflowers.
Chicken Harisso ($13)
Anything that is stewed whets up my appetite, especially when the meat is immersed in rich gravy and sauces. And the chicken. Oh... the tender, juicy meat........
Paella Valenciana ($47)
What is Spanish meal without a Paella? Milagro's version of paella is claimed to be the traditional kind that is served with chicken and vegetables instead of seafood. I am not really a fan of paella, but the rest of the bloggers loved this a lot!
This is a HUGE portion that is good for FOUR. Do not attempt to finish this alone, or even with 2. Your belly will explode.
Unless you starve yourself for 3 days.
Arroz Negre/Squid Ink Paella ($59)
How often do you get to see paella in squid ink?! This will definitely delight squid ink lovers who loves that unique, salty, taste of the sea flavour.
Catalan Chicken ($11)
Catalan chicken is your usual chicken chop served with a tomato-based paste. I love how their chicken skin is cooked to crispy goodness!
There are TWO awesome things about Milagro. Firstly, there is no service charge and GST, so everything is nett price!
And secondly, Milagro is on The Entertainer app, which means you get 1 for 1 dining deals if you are an Entertainer Member! If you do not own the app, I am actually running a giveaway for The Entertainer app on my Instagram, and it's super easy to take part.
Remember, the Instagram giveaway ends on June 9th 2015.
And if you are wondering, Milagro is actually Spanish for miracle! What a beautiful name, just like Evilbean.

Food Trail #3 - 49 Seats at Orchard Central (#08-08)
After the experience in Spain, we literally took about 10 steps to reach our next stop at 49 Seats, as it was just beside Milagro.
I am no stranger to the food at 49 Seats, having blogged about it quite sometime back. I also frequent their outlet at Kreta Ayer as they are one of the few rare cafes that still serves mains until 2:00 AM on weekdays and 4:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
One of the thing that amazed me was that the owners kept to the same price of their menu, even though they are in a prime area! And yes, they also do not charge GST and Service Charge at this outlet as well! This means that this is one of the best place to eat in Orchard Road without having to bust your wallet!
Smoked Duck Pasta ($14.90)
Carbonara lovers (like the Evilbean) will LOVE THIS CREAMY plate of pasta topped with succulent pieces of smoked duck and an egg. The fats on the duck are just so awesome!
Tom Yum Seafood Pasta ($14.90)
This still taste as awesome, and still teleports me to Thailand with every spoonful of this creamy tom yum sauce. Read my previous review on the Tom Yum Seafood Pasta here.
Fish Bites: 10 Pcs ($9.90)
I like the Al Scampi sauce that came with the fish bites - light yet flavourful.
Cheese Fries ($7.90)
The legendary cheese fries, with the same, generous amount of cheese. Up till now, I still have not found any other cafes that serve their fries with this amount of cheese. Kudos to 49 Seats for delighting cheese lovers like us!
With such affordable pricing and quality food, it is no wonder we saw a throng of people streaming into the cafe as dinner time approaches. Remember, you are not paying any service charge, so please, everything self-service. Automatic a bit. Don't complain if the service crew are unable to attend to you promptly.

Food Trail #4 - Nunsaram Korean Dessert Cafe (#05-51/52)
There can be no other better way to end off a food trail.
DESSERTS.
And what's more, the dessert is BINGSU, which is one of the trending desserts right now on Instagram. The heat is sweltering in recent weeks, and everyone is making a beeline to these heat-relieving bingsoos for comfort.
Strawberry Bingsu ($15.90)
This will be your bowl of cool comfort if you like strawberries.
REALLY REALLY LIKE STRAWBERRIES.
If not, you might find it "gelat" after a while as it can get a little too sweet.
Injeolmi Bingsu ($12.90)
Soybean powder, almond flakes, nuts and mochi balls gather and party in this delightful bowl of Injeolmi Bingsu! THIS IS SO GOOD.
Fluffy and soft snow ice that melts in your mouth instantaneously (apparently Nunsaram uses the expensive ice-machine imported from Korea, which explains the fluffy fine texture of their ice) and the party of toppings that gives the bingsu a multi-layered texture and taste makes the Injeolmi flavour one of my favourite!
I LOVEEEE their mochi balls, they somehow managed to make the balls so soft, yet chewy?!
I gave their Injeolmi Bingsu a #4evilbeans on my Instagram, but now that I see that it is only $12.90, I HAVE to revise my evilbean rating and give it a:
Rating (out of 5 Evilbeans):
(4.5)
Oreo Bingsu ($12.90)
Nothing ever goes wrong with Oreo. NOTHING.
Mango Bingsu ($15.90)
Topped with a scoop of mango ice-cream, this is the closest you can get to Mango Heaven.
Injeolmi Toast ($5.90)
If you can't get enough of the Injeolmi goodness, order this Injeolmi toast for the ultimate mochi-gasm. This is the true definition of a "Beautiful Mess".
Spicy Tteogkkochi ($4.90)
I thought this was tteokbokki, but it was actually tteogkkochi. I have absolutely no idea what's the difference, except that this was fried. I didn't really like it though. The fried parts tasted soggy and the sauce did not even have a hint of spiciness.
Any Koreans reading this right now able to shed some light between the difference between "tteokbokki" and "tteogkkochi"? Do comment below if you are hanguk saram!
Garlic Cheese Bread ($7.90)
OMGGGGGG just look at that flowing mess of cheese. This is one of the MUST TRY if you pop by Nunsaram! The toast - crispy perfection. The garlic and cheese - perfect combination of sweet and savoury flavours. Brilliant creation. Wild imagination. This deserves appreciation.

Together with the previous Orchard Central food trail list, this mall just keeps getting more and more attractive to food hoppers with these new additions! I believe if they keep this food trend going, this mall will become the #1 food destination for foodies in Orchard!
